Ep. 31: Cultivating the Next Generation of Wealth Creators with Seattle Pacific University President, Dan Martin

Being a lifelong learner is something that is very important to me. I’ve personally benefited from not being afraid to learn from people of all ages, those younger than me, as well as those who are older.

I believe it’s important to realize that we all have unique perspectives and it’s better to be open to learning from one another vs. putting up walls and thinking somehow I’ve got it all figured out.

Things started to shift for my business, once I started listening to millennials. Their focus on the integration of life, business and impact wasn’t a part of my generations natural equation and the way we thought about business and life. That isn’t to say that my generation has things that younger generations can learn from, too. With that, I’d like to introduce you to my guest, Dan Martin.

In today’s episode, I talk with Dan Martin, President of Seattle Pacific University, located in the Queen Anne neighborhood of Seattle. It’s SPU’s mission to engage the culture and change the world. During our conversation with Dan, we discuss:

  • Seattle Pacific’s unique approach to teaching the next generation of wealth creators. As a parent, you might be intrigued by how colleges are thinking about setting up students for success in money and life. And as a student, and aspiring wealth creator, you might be interested in learning how the school is going to support you in gaining the tools and experience needed to be successful in today’s competitive business landscape.

  • We also talk about the challenges he is facing as the leader of a private, liberal arts school in the center of Seattle. Which of course is a high growth market.

  • His advice for a “Type A,” hard driving, or what I refer to as an aspiring wealth creator somebody who wants to go out there and change the world, create some wealth for themselves and create a life of meaning and purpose.

This conversation challenged me to evaluate what I’m learning and from whom am I learning. I hope you also see opportunities to learn from those that are like you, and who might have a unique perspective on life.
